Something on My Mind by Nikki Grimes

Tom Feelings has illustrated a beautiful cover for Nikki Grimes’ collection of poetry entitled, Something on My Mind. Before you even open to the first page, the mood of the book is portrayed in the faces of five young African American children. Although none convey one specific emotion, they look as if they are searching for answers to their many questions. Throughout each poem, Grimes depicts the struggles of African American children in the 1970’s, but relates them to children everywhere this book of poetry is a great way to show children the diverse, and sometimes unfair, world we live in. Kids can easily make connections to this book, and it may help them feel heard about issues they are too scared to talk about. This dramatic and emotional collection shows children a darker side of life, yet keeps it uplifting and inspirational.
